ANALYSIS: Chris Herrmann was a limited source of offense as a backup catcher in Minnesota the last couple of years. He seems to be enjoying the Arizona climate a great deal more. The former Miami Hurricane has jumped into fantasy relevance with a few big games and has seen an increase in playing time ever since. In 69 at-bats, Herrmann is slashing .290/.342/.609 with five home runs and 19 RBI. His main obstacle to fantasy relevance would seem to be playing time, as he is stuck behind Welington Castillo, who has posted All-Star caliber numbers to start the season. Fortunately, Arizona manager Chip Hale is resourceful when it comes to putting players in a position to produce. Herrmann has actually seen a couple of starts in the outfield, bringing back memories of Brandon Inge.
Between off-days for Castillo, occasional outfield starts and pinch-hitting duties, Herrmann should still be able to produce good numbers for deep-league owners. Even as a part-time player, Herrmann is currently outproducing several full-time catchers, including Jason Castro, J.T. Realmuto and Francisco Cervelli. Don't let the lack of a starting job scare you. If you need a boost at the catcher position, Herrmann is an underrated option that is still widely available.
