Remember back in 2009 when Chris Coghlan, as a member of the then-Florida Marlins, won the NL Rookie of the Year Award? Neither do I. It’s been quite an interesting career for the center fielder since then. In 2010, he injured his knee celebrating a walk-off victory, needing surgery. In 2011 he struggled, eventually getting sent back down to the minors, only to go back on the DL with knee issues. He also suffered from shoulder injuries that year. In 2012, he was once again given an opportunity to showcase the impressive numbers he posted in ’09, but once again failed, slashing .140/.212/.183 before getting sent back down to Triple-A. After 2013, he was signed by the Cubs, and last year was his best since his rookie campaign. He posted career highs in home runs, stolen bases, walks, and his highest hits total in a season since 2009. His batting average was a meek .250, however, and by the end of the season, he’d lost his starting outfield spot as Kyle Schwarber contuingly impressed and Jorge Soler returned from an oblique injury. Now 30 years old, Coghlan figures to be a bench player for the Cubs, someone that won’t be getting nearly as much playing time, barring injuries. At this point, he shouldn’t garner any attention in drafts, ranking 100th out of 106 outfielders on our draft projections.
