BALLER MOVE: Start in 16+ Team Leagues
POSITIONAL VALUE: K2
ANALYSIS: Pittsburgh Steelers kicker Chris Boswell should only be considered in deeper leagues ahead of his matchup against the Cincinnati Bengals on Saturday, Dec. 23, 2023, at 4:30 p.m. EST. Although the veteran has remained quite accurate in his age-32 season, his production has dwindled as the Steelers struggle offensively. Pittsburgh will start its third different quarterback of the season on Saturday, suggesting their ongoing offensive meltdown might have no end in sight.
All in all, Boswell is 23-for-25 on field goals and 18-for-19 on extra points in 2023. He's coming off one of his worst outings this season in which he didn't attempt a field goal and also missed his first extra-point attempt in over two years. With that said, more than half of his made field goals have come from beyond 40 yards, which means that fantasy managers might benefit from bonus points for long-yardage conversions.
Furthermore, with quarterback Mason Rudolph set to start his first game of the year, there's an increased chance that the Steelers' offense could stall around midfield more than it pushes into the red zone. If so, the Steelers will call upon Boswell yet again to convert from long-range.
Therefore, the upside that Boswell possesses is enough to warrant consideration in leagues with 16 or more teams. Managers in smaller leagues should stick with more reliable kickers. However, those with no better options should feel okay about plugging Boswell into lineups as the fantasy playoffs roll on, especially against a Bengals team allowing 7.5 fantasy points per game to opposing kickers.
