ANALYSIS: While Charles Clay has only just barely managed to crack the top 20 at the tight end position in each of his two years with Buffalo, there is reason to believe his arrow might be pointing up. Closing out the 2016 season with 21 catches on 30 targets for 229 yards and all four of his touchdowns in the last four games, Clay's role expanded considerably during the season's final month. Fast forward to 2017 and Sammy Watkins has left the building, opening up a big role for Charles Clay as one of Tyrod Taylor's most integral pass catchers.
The late 2016 usage continued into Week 1 of 2017 as Clay was targeted a team-high 9 times, more than twice as many times as any player other than LeSean McCoy, catching four balls for 53 yards, a TD, and a top-five finish at the TE position in the season's opening week. Notably, Clay almost had a second TD when a Taylor pass slipped through his hands that resulted in a red-zone interception, but I wouldn't expect this to land him in the doghouse just yet. Bank on the targets and the red zone usage and add Clay.
