Fantasy Baseball Impact Of The Arizona Diamondbacks Releasing Carson Kelly
The Arizona Diamondbacks released catcher Carson Kelly on Tuesday, per the transactions portion of his MLB.com page.
The Diamondbacks previously announced that Kelly was designated for assignment on Sunday as part of a series of roster moves in a tweet from the National League West club’s Twitter account. Among the roster moves was the reinstatement of fellow catcher Gabriel Moreno from the 10-day injured list.
Kelly hit .226 with a .282 on-base percentage, one home run, and one stolen base in 92 plate appearances for the Diamondbacks this season. A mainstay in Arizona for much of the last few years, the 28-year-old logged at least 350 plate appearances in each of his last full three seasons with the club.
Carson Kelly Plate Appearances By Season With Arizona:
- 2019: 365 plate appearances
- 2020: 129 plate appearances
- 2021: 359 plate appearances
- 2022: 354 plate appearances
- 2023: 92 plate appearances
Without Kelly on the team’s roster, Arizona will move forward with Moreno and Jose Herrera behind the plate. The move all but underscores the former’s role as the starter – and as a starting option for fantasy managers in leagues with 14 or more teams – for the rest of the season.
The 23-year-old has enjoyed a quality fantasy season at the plate, hitting .274 with a .319 on-base percentage, three home runs, and four stolen bases as a rookie.
