BALLER MOVE: Add in All Leagues
OWNED IN: 20% of Fleaflicker Leagues
ANALYSIS: When Jake Mcgee hit the DL on Saturday, Colorado manager Walt Weiss pulled a surprise move by declaring Carlos Estevez to be the closer. With the experienced Jason Motte back in the bullpen mix, Estevez must have shown something to prove he deserves the role. He is carrying a 4.43 ERA and 1.23 WHIP at the moment, but has been somewhat victimized by Coors Field. His home and road ERA aren't vastly different, but his .321 BABIP at home is drastically different from his .143 BABIP on the road.
None of his current peripherals jump off the page or scream "closer material." Estevez did elevate his K/9 to 11 last year in the minors, although it is currently at 9.7 in the majors. The Rockies seem to be betting on potential with the 23-year-old to see what they have. Fantasy owners in need of saves may be inclined to do the same. Mcgee was on shaky ground before his injury, so there is no guarantee he will regain the job when he returns. Those speculating to add Estevez might hesitate upon seeing that it was Boone Logan, not Estevez who picked up the save on Sunday against San Diego. Estevez had appeared in back-to-back games and four of the previous five before Sunday, so it was likely just a matter of rest. Adding any pitcher in Colorado naturally comes with a bit of trepidation, but owners desperate for saves mid-year must be willing to roll the dice.
