Analysis: When most people found out that the Rockies put Carlos Estevez in the closer's role, it would be easy to get confused and think they signed Charlie Sheen, whose real name is Carlos Estevez, based off of the heat he displayed in Major League. Little-known Carlos Estevez is just 23 years old and has thrown just 22.1 innings in the majors, but has already flashed some promising stuff from the mound. This year, he has a 4.03 ERA, 4.16 FIP, a solid 9.3 K/9, and an impressive WHIP of 1.12. The downsides have come from the obvious truths of young age and pitching in Coors Field, as he has a BB/9 of 4.0 and a HR/9 of 1.2. The good news is, these aren't natural flaws, they seem to be results of park conditions and growing pains.
After being signed as an 18-year-old free agent from the Dominican Republic, Estevez has accumulated a 3.90 ERA, 1.275 WHIP, and an 8.3 K/9, while displaying ability to command the strike zone and suppress power with a BB/9 of 2.6 and a HR/9 of just 0.6 in 242.1 IP. It is never easy to pitch in Denver, and at 23 years old Estevez still has a lot to learn. However with his ability to strike batters out and track record of finding the strike zone plus limiting homers, Estevez is a solid saves option for the Rockies.
