When Jenrry Mejia went down in April the Mets turned to Familia to close out their games. They never looked back. Familia's nickname should be the Family Stone, because he was solid as a rock. He introduced a splitter into his arsenal to compliment his high octane fastball, and the combination was just devastating for opposing batters. Familia ranked fourth among qualifying closers in ERA, and third in saves. His WHIP of 1.00 was spectacular, and he struck out 86 batters in 78 innings pitched. He did have some hiccups in the postseason, but as long as he doesn't go the route of Brad Lidge he should be one of the top closers in 2016.
Last year wasn't quite out of nowhere either because Familia had performed well in 2014 as well. I think that the 26 year old is in the perfect environment to continue to improve with the Mets. The insanely good rotation that the Mets are blessed with will lead to a lot of close games where the Amazins will be in a position to win. I won't crown him as the top closer yet, especially with Chapman and Kimbrel moving to better teams, but Familia should be in the top tier of closers off the board on Draft Day.
