The backfield for the Denver Broncos has been confusing for fantasy owners thus far, with neither C.J. Anderson nor Ronnie Hillman producing consistent enough numbers for fantasy owners to be confident in their production on a weekly basis. In Sunday's game against the Green Bay Packers though, both running backs showcased their ability, and led Denver to a huge 29-10 victory.
C.J. Anderson has been a huge disappointment for fantasy owners this year, especially those who spent a first round pick on the third year running back. Prior to Sunday's game, Anderson had yet to rush over 50 yards, and did had yet to score a touchdown. Despite Anderson's lack of production, the Broncos have continued to feed Anderson the rock on a consistent basis, and it paid off last night. Anderson broke out for 101 yards rushing against the Packers, including a 28-yard scamper for a touchdown. Anderson showcased the burst fantasy owners were expecting from him all year, which should make owners hopeful for the coming weeks.
Ronnie Hillman has outplayed C.J. Anderson thus far this season, and the Broncos decided to give Hillman the start over Anderson in Sunday's game as a result. Hillman has also had more carries than Anderson as of recent. Last week, Hillman had 20 carries to Anderson's 13 carries, and last night against the Packers, Hillman carried the ball 19 times to Anderson's 14 carries. Hillman rushed the ball for 60 yards and two touchdowns in Denver's victory, giving Denver a solid cushion before halftime.
As far as the running back situation in Denver is concerned, there won't be many weeks where both Anderson and Hillman can thrive. Peyton Manning's declining ability to throw the football will likely allow defenses to key in on the rushing attack and reduce both Anderson and Hillman's effectiveness. Hillman is an RB2 and Anderson, despite his breakout performance, is a risky RB2/FLEX play next week against the Colts.
