ANALYSIS: From an insurance running back to maybe much more. Bucky Irving, a late-round rookie target in fantasy drafts, showed he may be the most efficient runner in the Tampa Bay backfield.
The fourth-round pick totaled 76 yards on 11 touches, averaging 6.9 yards per carry and seven yards per reception. His size (5-foot-10, 195 pounds) makes him look like a third-down back. While he's a solid pass catcher, he's effective running through the gaps.
Highest YPC for a rookie RB in week 1 of the last decade and their fantasy finish in PPG, minimum 8 Week 1 carries
1. Kareem Hunt 2017, 8.7 - RB5
2.Bucky Irving 2024, 6.9 - RB?
3.Saquon Barkley 2018, 5.9 - RB2
4.Dalvin Cook 2017, 5.8 - RB10
5.Bijan Robinson 2023, 5.6 - RB16— Nathan Jahnke (@PFF_NateJahnke) September 9, 2024
The Buccaneers' starter, Rachaad White, was inefficient on the ground again in Week 1. White took 15 carries for 31 yards (2.1 YPC) against Washington. He averaged 3.6 YPC last year and didn't crack 1,000 rush yards on 272 carries.
White's still a dynamic threat in the passing game, catching six passes for 75 yards on Sunday. He recorded 64 receptions a year ago. While his rushing production leaves a lot to be desired, his play through the air will keep him involved.
Irving's a priority addition off waiver wires. His offensive participation could increase as he gets more NFL games under his belt. White will have a role, but if Irving continues to outrun his counterpart, the coaches will be forced to give the rookie more responsibility. If White suffers an injury, Irving could be in line for a 20-touch contest.
