Analysis: Brandon Finnegan turned 23 years old on April 14th. Since 2014, he has pitched 142.1 inning, made 19 total starts, and was pitching in the World Series a few months after being drafted out of TCU; so a learning opportunity of a 2016 season for the rebuilding Cincinnati Reds must seem like a piece of cake for Finnegan. After starting his career out of the bullpen, Finnegan has made all 15 of his Reds appearances this season in the starting rotation and has made some solid progress. He has a 3.81 ERA and a 1.33 WHIP, he is struggling with strikeouts and strike zone command with K/9 and BB/9 of 6.1 and 4.2, and he is allowing 1.1 HR/9 which should be expected when you take the mound in Great American Ball Park.
Already in June, Finnegan has already pitched 32.1 innings more than the rest of his MLB career combined, and it shows that he is adjusting to the work load. However, with a 2.96 ERA and 1.192 WHIP in four June starts, it is clear that he is adjusting well and learning effectively as he goes. Fantasy owners are warned that he will have an innings limit at the backend of this season which will severely limit if not altogether eliminate any fantasy value.
