Right now Boston has a crowded catching corps with Blake Swihart, Ryan Hanigan and Christian Vazquez all on the roster. After Spring Training, it'll probably be pared down to two and Swihart has the upper hand on the depth chart. He's the youngest of the three and would probably benefit from having the older Hanigan around to back up and mentor him. Swihart had a rough start to the 2015 season when he was called up, but he was hitting the cover off the ball in the second half to finish the year with a .274 average. He showed very little power, with only five homers. Two of our writers did rank him in their lists of the Top 300 players, with a range between No. 207 and No. 254. The other wasn't entirely convinced and left him completely off their list. It's always better to take catchers later on in the draft, since studs like Buster Posey and Kyle Schwarber will go earlier and then the talent pool thins to kiddie-pool levels after that. If you need a catcher desperately, get Swihart... you could do a lot worse, but don't expect immediate greatness either.
