I ran the auto racing statistical archive race-database.com from 2007 to 2015 and have been doing advanced auto racing analytics since 2013, mostly on my website Racermetrics. I was generally regarded as the fastest typist in the world throughout the 2010s, being most famous for winning the Ultimate Typing Championship at the South by Southwest Interactive conference in 2010. In 2021, I released my first book, Nerds per Minute: A History of Competitive Typing. I am currently doing research for a second book where I intend to rank the top 1,000 drivers in motorsports history and have built several statistical models to rank drivers across various motorsports series. I have just recently launched a blog at http://seanwrona.substack.com/ where I am releasing one driver capsule a day for my book if you are interested in subscribing. I earned a BA in Economics and an MPS in Applied Statistics from Cornell University in 2007 and 2008 respectively. I also am an expert-rated tournament Scrabble player. In high school, I was the statistician for the Mensa Scrabble-by-Mail Special Interest Group and wrote a 15-20 page column in that group's newsletter every other month. As you can see, I've been at this for a quarter century already.

BJ McLeod Now Part-Time, but Still Entering Drafting Races

After selling his Live Fast Motorsports charter to Spire Motorsports last year, BJ McLeod has dropped back to a partial schedule but he continues to enter the races on drafting tracks because those are the only tracks where he realistically could get a decent finish with his team's underfunded equipment. McLeod has been generally good […...

Carson Hocevar's Inexperience at Talladega Makes Him Hard to Predict

Carson Hocevar starts way back in 35th for his first Talladega race as a full-time NASCAR Cup Series driver, but he did start the second Talladega race last year in the Legacy Motor Club No. 42 car. In that race, he crashed after never really significantly factoring. In his Craftsman Truck Series starts at Talladega, […...

Shane van Gisbergen a Better Drafter than Expected

Shane van Gisbergen makes his NASCAR Cup Series debut on a drafting track today at Talladega, but he's already shown something of a proclivity in drafting in his Xfinity Series starts, finishing 3rd at Atlanta and running in the top five for large portions of this weekend's Xfinity race, including passing Sammy Smith for the […...

Ross Chastain Strong on Drafting Tracks, but Greatest Strengths Lie Elsewhere

Ross Chastain qualified 32nd for this weekend's GEICO 500 at Talladega, but starting positions don't really matter here as long as you miss the wrecks. Chastain has been a solid performer on drafting tracks as he has made an on-track pass for the lead in eight of the fourteen NextGen drafting races to date including […...

Daniel Suárez the Luckiest Driver at Texas, Scores Top Five

Daniel Suárez had a strong fifth-place finish at Texas this weekend, which is one of his most consistent tracks. However, he ran much worse than his finishing result and was probably the luckiest driver in the race. Suarez, the winner of the previous high-banked intermediate race at Atlanta, was nowhere to be seen for most […...

Late Spinout Costs Denny Hamlin Likely Second-Place Finish

Denny Hamlin had a methodical run at Texas. He ranked second in average speed behind only his driver, Tyler Reddick, who tied him for third in laps led with 37. However, Hamlin's strong run was cut short when he spun out on the penultimate lap of the race shortly after Chase Elliott cleared him for […...

Ty Gibbs Had Speed at Texas, But Burnt by Pit Crew

Ty Gibbs qualified on the outside front row alongside polesitter Kyle Larson at Texas, but he fell to 13th in what was an extremely topsy-turvy afternoon. Gibbs fell to 8th after the first round of green flag pit stops because he pitted several laps later than the other leaders, then fell to the back after […...

Ryan Blaney Was Best Ford Driver Until Wreck With Ryan Preece

Ryan Blaney started 7th and consistently ran in the top ten in this weekend's race at Texas until he was wrecked by Ryan Preece on lap 181, resulting in a disappointing 33rd-place finish, which did not reflect how well the No. 12 Ford ran. After staying out on the first Stage break, Blaney had his […...

Intermediates Not Zane Smith's Bread and Butter

Zane Smith had one of his fastest races of the season last week at Martinsville. Because of that, he overtook Kaz Grala and Daniel Hemric to not have the worst speed percentile of the season anymore, but he's still had a rough start and has been consistently slower than his teammates, Carson Hocevar and Corey […...

Jimmie Johnson the GOAT at Texas, But NextGen Performance Is Lacking

Jimmie Johnson is clearly the greatest driver in Texas Motor Speedway history, with a record seven wins and 1,152 laps led. He even impressed in the 2022 IndyCar race at Texas as well, where he finished directly between multi-champion teammates Scott Dixon and Álex Palou in his first oval start. However, while it is one […...

Austin Hill Makes First Cup Series Start of 2024

Austin Hill has finished in the top ten in his last four Texas Motor Speedway starts in the NASCAR Xfinity Series and led 25 laps in this weekend's event on an alternate pit sequence, but he probably won't replicate that feat in Sunday's NASCAR Cup Series event. Hill will be making his first Cup start […...

Kaz Grala Slowest in Practice at Texas

Kaz Grala starts this weekend's Texas race from the 33rd position. Although Grala was the slowest driver to post a qualifying time in the first qualifying group, he did post a slightly faster lap than his teammate, Justin Haley, although Haley will be starting one position better because he ranked higher within his qualifying group. […...

Noah Gragson Strong at Texas in Xfinity Series, but Cup Series Prospects Remain Unclear

Although Noah Gragson did not start last year's Texas race because it came after Legacy Motor Club suspended him for the season, he finished 21st in the fall Texas event of 2022, which was held the day after Gragson won from the pole in the Xfinity Series to complete his four-race win streak in that […...

Texas Native Chris Buescher Historically Struggles at Home Track

Chris Buescher may be Texas's current native son in NASCAR, but his record at his home track is lackluster. Not only has he never finished better than 14th at Texas, he's also never led a lap under green, as he performs better on short tracks and road courses than the 1.5-mile intermediates. However, Buescher had, […...

Intermediates a Strength for Josh Berry, but Not So Far in the Cup Series

Josh Berry qualified 25th for his first Cup Series race at Texas Motor Speedway and it's difficult to forecast his performance. Intermediates were arguably Berry's best track type in the NASCAR Xfinity Series as he scored a majority of his wins and laps led on them, but he never finished better than 6th at Texas. […...

Chase Briscoe Has Great Run At Martinsville

Chase Briscoe had easily his best run of the season at Martinsville on Sunday en route to a 10th-place finish. Teammate Ryan Preece passed him at the end because he took tires on the final caution, and Briscoe did not. However, Briscoe ranked sixth in speed, had an average running position of eighth, and easily […...

Alex Bowman Still Solid Despite Teammates' Podium Sweep

Sunday's Martinsville race commemorated the 40th anniversary of Hendrick Motorsports' first win. Alex Bowman saw his teammates sweep the podium, but he enjoyed one of his best runs of the season while finishing eighth. Bowman ran in the top 10 for almost the entire race and had an average running position of eighth. He also […...

Joey Logano Had Best Pit Strategy But Lacked Winning Speed at Martinsville

Joey Logano had an extremely consistent run at Martinsville yesterday, both starting and finishing sixth and ranking seventh in speed. Although he outran his defending champion teammate, Ryan Blaney, for most of the race, Blaney ran better in the final stage and ended up beating Logano by a single position. Logano led most of Stage […...

Kyle Larson Fastest at Martinsville But Not When It Mattered

Kyle Larson won his second consecutive pole at Martinsville yesterday and led the entire first stage without being passed, but was unable to convert that into a race victory. On the stage break caution on lap 86, he took four tires while Joey Logano took two and Larson couldn't make it back to the lead […...

Ricky Stenhouse Jr. On Pace For Slowest Ever Season

Ricky Stenhouse Jr. is plodding through quite a rough patch right now. His current speed percentile of 29.42 ranks fourth from last in the NASCAR Cup Series this year. Stenhouse has had below-average speed in every race except the Daytona 500 and it raises the question whether Chevrolet shifted some of its investment away from […...

Zane Smith Begins Martinsville 24th On Sunday

After Richmond, Zane Smith overtook Daniel Hemric to become the slowest full-time driver of 2024 with a speed percentile of 16.93. However, he will start 24th at Martinsville. The Spire Motorsports driver ranked higher in his round of qualifying. Smith has never competed at Martinsville in the NASCAR Cup Series, but he did win here […...

Short Tracks Remain Michael McDowell's Greatest Weakness

Michael McDowell qualified 35th for Sunday's Martinsville race and this is one of his worst tracks historically. McDowell's average finish stands at 28.4 and he has never finished better than 14th at Martinsville. Front Row Sports' top driver and short tracks have not mixed. Although he usually outruns his teammate Todd Gilliland, short tracks are […...

Carson Hocevar Quickest For Spire But Starts 25th Sunday

Carson Hocevar was the fastest qualifier of the three Spire Motorsports drivers for Sunday's Cook Out 400 at Martinsville. However, he will be starting one position behind his teammate Zane Smith because Smith finished higher in his qualifying group. Hocevar had an extremely mediocre run at Martinsville last year, finishing 31st four laps down and […...

Daniel Hemric Faster But Not Fast Enough

Daniel Hemric overtook Zane Smith to not be in last place in speed percentile this year at Richmond last weekend, but his speed percentile of 17.87 still ranks second worst in the Cup Series and even at Richmond, he was only faster than 20% of the other cars in that race. Hemric was solid at […...

Kaz Grala Best On Short Tracks But Not At Martinsville

Kaz Grala makes his NASCAR Cup Series debut at Martinsville. While the Rick Ware Racing driver had decent speed at Richmond, don't expect him to repeat that feat at Martinsville. This is because his average finish of 21.5 in the Xfinity Series and an average finish of 17.0 in the Craftsman Truck Series. Short tracks […...

Harrison Burton Starts 34th From Martinsville On Sunday

Harrison Burton starts 34th at Martinsville on Sunday, far off his three de facto Penske teammates who all qualified in the top fifteen. Like Austin Cindric, Burton has been much closer to his stronger 2022 speed than his weaker 2023 speed this year, but short tracks remain Burton's Achilles' heel. He has never finished better […...

Austin Cindric Has Issues On Short Tracks Like Martinsville

Austin Cindric qualified 14th for tomorrow's Martinsville race. Although he was generally much faster in 2022 than in 2023, he did have his best ever Martinsville finish in the 2023 fall event when he finished 9th. However, he is not particularly known for his short track prowess. Cindric had below average speed at both Bristol […...

Bubba Wallace's Late-Race Contact With Kyle Larson Ends Up Hurting Him

Bubba Wallace had a very strong run at Richmond this past weekend with an average running position of sixth, his best on a short track since the previous Richmond race last summer. He ranked fifth in driver rating at 102.6 and seventh in average speed. Wallace was running fifth before spinning out Kyle Larson in […...

Chase Elliott Not As Fast As Finish Shows At Richmond

Chase Elliott showed his fastest recent pace at times in this past weekend's Richmond race, where his second-place qualifying run was his best since the 2022 fall Martinsville race. He was very fast in the wet portion of the Toyota Owners 400, taking the lead from teammate Kyle Larson on the opening lap before Larson […...

Christopher Bell Had Right Strategy, But Penalty Took Him Out At Richmond

Christopher Bell attempted a similar strategy to his Joe Gibbs Racing teammate, Denny Hamlin, the eventual winner of Sunday night's Toyota Owners 400 at Richmond, but it fell short largely because Bell sped in the pits on his penultimate pit stop. Although Bell did not have the speed of his other teammate, Martin Truex, Jr., […...
