ANALYSIS: An early season oblique injury has kept Anthony DeSclafani on the sidelines waiting for his 2016 debut. He would also be the first of six starting pitchers to be placed on the disabled list for the Cincinnati Reds in the first two months. But fear not because for those of you that stashed him away or were planning on getting a spark plug for your rotation when the calendar turned to June, DeSclafani has finally arrived.
The K/9 is nothing special (7.32) and his career BABIP (.320) and ERA (4.38) are not very encouraging. His FIP of 3.69 gives a little reprieve to the bloated ERA while his 1.35 WHIP and .271 BAA have taken steps forward through hard work and determination.
Make no mistake, DeSclafani is probably going to be a little rusty at first given the recovery from a tricky injury such as an oblique. Also keep in mind that the Reds are still not a very good baseball team as a whole and will still be in full rebuild mode sooner than later. But it is not every day that a starter such as DeSclafani comes available to jump start a struggling pitching staff. For those of you rostering the likes of Tyson Ross, Patrick Corbin, Anibal Sanchez and Phil Hughes should cut bait and add DeSclafani right now. At only 12% owned most owners will probably wait for him to get a few starts and prove himself before they add him. Beat them to the punch and do it now.
