ANALYSIS: The difference between Anthony DeSclafani's first half of the season and second half of the season are substantial. He produced a 5.23 ERA and 1.27 WHIP in eight starts during the first half of the season, including a 6.66 ERA and 1.44 WHIP through the month of July. Through the second half of the season, "Disco" has managed a 2.97 ERA and 1.13 WHIP off of an explosive month of August in which he produced a 1.95 ERA and 0.94 WHIP in four starts. Though his K/9 dipped to 6.8 during his hot stretch of August, several other facets of his game improved substantially.
While his K/9 was the lowest of the season, so was his 0.98 BB/9. In combination with this, DeSclafani has greatly minimized damage this month by holding opponents to just 27.7% hard contact and 19.3% soft contact, while improving his GB/FB ratio to 1.30 off of 43.8% grounders. That influx of bunny contact to non-airborne batted balls has been a significant contributor to his improved performances from the mound in Great American Ball Park. Though his strikeout volume has regressed, Anthony DeSclafani has had a nicely resurgent month of August after getting a late start to 2018, and his consistent ability of late to produce quality outings outweighs a slight reduction in strikeouts.
