ANALYSIS: Did QB Matt Ryan have anything to do with Alec Pierce's top-24 wideout performance this past Sunday? Probably, but what's a wide receiver without a quarterback? Nothing, that's what. And even then, it is not that Pierce finished Week 6 with double-digit targets or anything like that. He just did enough to turn in a WR2 outing for the second week in a row and we're more than pleased with it.
Pierce has scored at least 9.1 PPR points in each of the past three weeks with improving results almost on a weekly basis. He went from nine to 12, 15, and lastly 13.9 PPR points this past Sunday. His targets surged from five to six, nine, and ultimately seven last weekend.
While Pierce was a bit meh when it actually came to catching passes against the Jags he still finished with a 3-of-7, 49-yard outing including scoring his first touchdown of the season. It's now back-to-back weeks for Pierce getting into the top-24 WRs of the week – he finished Week 4 in the WR3 realm, too.
Of course, Ryan had his best game of the season to date (and probably ROS) completing 42-of-58 passes for 389 yards and dishing out three touchdown dimes. That type of volume/yardage is going to be hardly repeatable (he had not attempted more than 41 passes prior to last Sunday) but even then Pierce didn't need 10+ targets to succeed nor did he catch even four passes.
Pierce is only the WR3 of the Colts' offense but he's running more routes and getting more targets than anybody not named Parris Campbell or Michael Pittman Jr. while outperforming the former (10 FPPG to Campbell's 6.8) so far this season.
Pierce is not a league-winning player but a WR2 in his offense with enough volume/abilities to turn in weekly WR3/Flex fantasy points.
