ANALYSIS: Alcides Escobar is nothing if not dependable. He has not had a significant injury since becoming a full-time starter back in 2010. Last year, the 148 games he played was actually his lowest since that time as well. In terms of production, Escobar might as well play for the Giants because he seems to do much better in even years. His batting averages in odd years, starting in 2011: .254, .234, .257. His average in even years: .293, .285, .261 (2016). His current average actually seems a bit low considering the trend.
His stolen base numbers have also fluctuated, but last year was the first time in that same span he has failed to reach 20 SB. With 10 stolen bases already in 43 games, Escobar is on pace for one of his better seasons of thievery. He has stolen as many as 35 in a season, so 40 SB is attainable, along with 50 RBI and a decent average. Escobar will never be among the elite shortstops in fantasy baseball, but at such a low price tag, owners could reap great rewards by plugging him into the SS position.
