BALLER MOVE: Add in 12-Team Leagues
ROSTERED IN: 37% of leagues
ANALYSIS: St. Louis Cardinals starting pitcher Adam Wainwright dominated the Colorado Rockies on Sunday, pitching 8 1/3 scoreless innings while allowing just three hits and three walks and recording five strikeouts. The outing was Wainwright's third quality start over his past four starts. Through seven games this year, Wainwright is 2-3 with a 3.80 ERA and 1.22 WHIP.
Wainwright was an extremely reliable fantasy option in 2020, when he went 5-3 with a 3.15 ERA and 1.05 WHIP. So far this year, he's picking up right where he left off in 2020. His 3.80 ERA so far this year is strong, but his 3.44 xERA suggests there could even be some room for improvement going forward. He has a 23.5% strikeout rate so far this year, which ranks in just the 46th percentile, but it's a career-best mark for him. Even back in 2013, when he went 19-9 with a 2.94 ERA and 1.07 WHIP, his strikeout rate was slightly below this year's clip, at 22.9%.
The Cardinals will continue riding Wainwright for as long as he has gas in the tank and fantasy managers should do the same. He should be rostered in all leagues of 12 teams or deeper. His next start will be on Saturday against the San Diego Padres.
