ANALYSIS: Kyrie Irving is back. So that means Patty Mills' upside is now cut in half, right? Wrong! Well, maybe that "in half" is more of a joke than reality because of Irving's availability only on games played on the road and not in New York. Anyway, virtually the minute Irving came back Kevin Durant went down injured. I mean, it's not that a wing like Durant was going to take minutes from Mills, but surely touches and possessions. That's not happening now, and Kyrie is only doing it every other game.
Mills started the year as a reserve--his expected role at signing time this summer--then grabbed hold of a starting position and that has been the case in 27 of the past 30 games going all the way back to Nov. 16, more than two months ago! It's now been four games starting for Patty at all PG/SG/SF positions while logging 29 minutes at the very least. Mills endured a rough shooting start to 2022 (26.5% in the first six games of the year) but he's rebounded nicely of late with a much healthier 52% clip on nearly 11 FGA per game.
You have to love to raw points Mills is scoring on a nightly basis (13+ PPG on the season, 15+ as a starter) to go with 3.2 3PM per game (!). The freebies are just not a part of Mills' game, but he makes up for that with staggering shooting percentages and his three-pointers. Mills virtually never turns the ball over (seven total turnovers in the 11 games since Jan. 1) and a few rebounds and boards with the odd steal and block. Not a negative in any category, but obviously worth rostering because of his shooting and points more than anything.
