ANALYSIS: Even after earning All-ACC (2x) and 2020-21 ACC DPOY honors for an inspired Georgia Tech squad last year, undersized PG Jose Alvarado still went undrafted in 2021. Now with the Birmingham Squadron and New Orleans Pelicans on a two-way deal, the Brooklyn native is showing poignant signs of a potential NBA breakthrough. A statistical jack-of-all-trades through his college career who notched career-high rates for three-point, two-point, and FT conversion as a senior, Alvarado somehow managed to outd0 himself through five G League games; averaging 19.8 points, 6.0 rebounds, 6.8 assists, 3.4 steals, and 12 of 28 long-range shooting (42.9%) in 34.0 MP.
While his shooting has been a bit slower to heat up on the NBA level, Alvarado is showing NOLA a thing or two about efficient production. He's only had 166 MP over 18 games so far, but 125 have come in ten January contests, and over the last four games (seeing 15-20 minutes a night) he has produced 7.0 points, 2.3 boards, 3.0 assists, and 2.5 steals, with only two turnovers in his last 122 minutes played. That's third on the team in assist rate (24.8%), second in turnover rate (6.1%), and first in steal rate (5.4%, more than double that of Herbert Jones). The 17-28 Pelicans are strapped for backcourt reinforcements and Nickeil Alexander-Walker has proven less effective of late as a facilitator, so while it might not be immediate, securing Jose Alvarado could have quite the under-the-radar impact in deeper formats.
