Mancini came out hotter than anybody in 2021, slashing .278/.344/.515 in the season's first two months. During that time he posted an elite barrel rate at 14% all while striking out at a very low clip as well (21%). He was looking like an early MVP candidate at that point. However, things went south fast for Mancini and over his next four months he slashed just .243/.296/.387 to finish the year as a mediocre fantasy player (.255/.326/.432 with 21 homers and no steals). It is probably too soon to write him off and say he will never eclipse those first two months again, but it does seem more likely that he is just not going to be a significant fantasy contributor now as he enters his thirties. The ADP does give the Mancini believers an out, as he is currently getting drafted at pick 185 on average. While a 30 homer, .280 batting average is not outside of the range of outcomes for Mancini, fantasy managers would be better served chasing more upside at this point in the draft. Let someone else take a shot on Mancini this year.--Jon Anderson

Free-agent first baseman Trey Mancini has signed a minor-league deal with the Miami Marlins that includes an invite to major-league spring training. The veteran was designated for assignment by the Cubs in early August and while he briefly latched on with the Reds, the club released him by the end of August. While the 31-year-old has largely been a productive bat throughout his career, he cratered to a .234 average alongside just four home runs and a .635 OPS across 263 plate appearances with the Cubs in 2023, production that graded out 26% below the league average, as per his 74 wRC+. Mancini owns a solid 109 wRC+ in parts of seven MLB seasons split between the Orioles, Astros, and Cubs while he will battle for reps at first base, designated hitter, and potentially the outfield with the Marlins in spring training.--Brenton Kemp

The Cincinnati Reds have signed first baseman Trey Mancini to a minor-league deal. The 31-year-old veteran was recently cut by the Chicago Cubs after signing a two-year deal with the organization this past offseason. This season, Mancini is slashing .234/.299/.366 with four home runs and 28 RBI in 63 games. The expectation is that he'll likely head to Triple-A in order to get his bat back up to speed. Mancini should be able to provide some right-handed power to the Reds lineup for a postseason push. However, Mancini hasn't done enough this season to prove that a move to Cincinnati will give him reliable fantasy value.--Andy Webb - RotoBaller

First baseman/designated hitter Trey Mancini cleared waivers on Thursday and is now a free agent, according to MLB.com. The Chicago Cubs designated the 31-year-old for assignment on August 1 after slashing .234/.299/.336 with four homers, 31 runs, and 28 RBI over 79 games. Mancini hasn't been the same since his 2019 campaign, in which he posted a .899 OPS, as he owns just a .717 mark since. The seven-year veteran is likely irrelevant in all fantasy leagues for the remainder of 2023, even if he latches onto another team.--Spencer Seguin

The Chicago Cubs are "planning to remove" Trey Mancini from their roster, according to Michael Cerami of Bleacher Nation. As of now, it's unclear whether Mancini will be traded, designated for assignment, or released. However, his time in Chicago is over. The 31-year-old is in the midst of a frustrating season, slashing .234/.299/.336 with a 29.7 K% and 74 wRC+. He has spent most of the year at first base but also logged reps as the Cubs' right fielder and designated hitter. FanGraphs' WAR metric labels Mancini as below replacement level both offensively (-10.5 oWAR) and defensively (-6.6 dWAR).--Andersen Pickard - RotoBaller
