Devin Vassell is worth considering as a fantasy basketball waiver wire pickup heading into Week 2 of the NBA season.
BALLER MOVE: Add in 14-team Leagues
ROSTERED IN: 20% of leagues
ANALYSIS: Devin Vassell is entering his sophomore and age-22 season with the Spurs. He already appeared on 62 games last year (starting 7 of them) and he, once more, projects to get off the pine more often than not in 2022 as San Antonio relaunches--now for real without the likes of DeMar DeRozan and Rudy Gay around--their franchise and put on a potential true rebuilding mode in which youngsters will be the go-to guys on the squad.
Vassell, even on just 17 MPG last season, gathered a not-so-horrid 14.3% usage rate as part of the second unit and was able to stay above water in both defensive and offensive win shares (he closed the year with a combined 1.5 WS, a 108 ORtg, and a 112 DRtg). Now on a bulkier role (yes, it's only been two games, but still) he's playing a higher 22.5 MPG and he's been able to pretty much double his average production from his rookie-season baseline.
Two games into the season, Vassell is putting up numbers all across the board. The averages are sitting at 12-3-3-2 and the forward has yet to commit a turnover on the season, even on a higher 18.5% usage rate these days. He exploded for 19 pops on a 66.7% shooting night (12 FGA) in G1, but then came down crashing to earth shooting just 28.6% against Denver last Friday. Vassell should stay at around a 36% three-point conversion rate, nearly an 85% free-throw percentage, and reach a 10-2-2-1 line over his second season as a pro if all things go according to plan--with upside for more if his role/minutes grow as the season advances.
