NASCAR Rankings Analysis

The NASCAR Cup Series playoffs roll along to Vegas and, uhh...surprise, surprise, Kyle Larson is the favorite!

Larson won here in March, leading 103 laps on his way to the victory. If you're looking for someone to lead 100-plus laps and post a ton of fastest laps as well, you've got to go with Larson in a large percentage of your lineups.

Other possible dominator candidates:

  • Brad Keselowski, who led 27 laps and finished second here in March. He's also a three-time winner at this track, making it his second-most winningest track after Talladega.
  • Denny Hamlin led 47 laps in March. He's never won here, but he does have four top fives.

One interesting sleeper this week: Chris Buescher, who rolls off 25th. I'll be playing a ton of Buescher, whose average finish here is 16.9 and who has finished 15th or better in five of the past six Vegas races. His worst finish at the track since joining Roush Fenway has been 14th. Play Buescher.

Other interesting values: Daniel Suarez, who led 12 laps here earlier in the year but finished 26th. This Trackhouse team has shown some decent speed -- plus, the NASCAR starting formula that puts the playoff drivers up front means that you have to reach for different looks if you want to get those precious place differential points.

The other big note for this week: carnage.

Both the Truck Series and Xfinity Series races here this weekend have been marred by crashes that have taken out playoff drivers. Non-playoff drivers Christian Eckes and Josh Berry found victory in those races. In the Truck race, Sheldon Creed, Chandler Smith, and John Hunter Nemechek all finished 33rd or worse. In Xfinity, playoff drivers Riley Herbst, Sam Mayer, Jeb Burton, and Jeremy Clements all finished 30th or worse.

All this is to say that I think you should broaden your exposure in this race over what you usually have. Reach deeper in the pool. I mean, Bayley Currey was 13th in the Xfinity race. Austin Wayne Self was eighth in the Truck race.

Don't be afraid to play someone ranked as low as Justin Haley as a carnage option. I'd still avoid going below Haley because the cars behind him get to be pretty bad, but he's in play more than he'd usually. Same goes for guys like Anthony Alfredo.
