Nestor Cortes Jr. Strikes Out Career-High 11 Batters
3 years agoNew York Yankees starting pitcher Nestor Cortes Jr. turned in one of the best performances of his career Wednesday against the Orioles. Cortes limited Baltimore to one run on three hits over 6 1/3 innings while striking out a career-high 11 batters. The lefty issued just two walks. Cortes' previous high for punchouts was seven, though he eclipsed that mark after striking out the side in the fourth frame. The lefty primarily used three pitches, his fastball, cutter, and slider, though he generated at least two whiffs on all five offerings he threw. Cortes hasn't had much luck in the win department but has been an excellent fantasy contributor otherwise, pitching to a 2.60 ERA with a 27.3 percent strikeout rate and minuscule .204 expected batting average against in 79 2/3 innings. He's in line for another good outing with a favorable matchup against the Rangers on tap. They own the lowest OPS in all of baseball.
