ANALYSIS: Juwan Johnson, even though you might have never heard his name before, just kicked off his second pro season after debuting last year and playing seven games (four of them starting). The truth is, you're forgiven for not knowing a lot about the tight end, as he just logged 4 receptions on 10 targets for 39 yards over those 7 games combined. Not the greatest line out there, am I right?
Good for everybody involved--player, team, and fantasy GMs--the new season brought new hopes and exploits. Johnson, as ridiculous as it sounds, closed his Sunday performance as the TE4 of the week pending MNF. He racked up 17.1 PPR points to the tune of 3 receptions on 3 targets for 21 yards... and 2 touchdowns! Only one player finished a game 3-3-2 last year while gaining fewer than 21 yards (Greg Ward) with another one (Kyle Juszczyk) putting up a 2-3-2 himself with 10 receiving yards.
What the paragraph above means, is that Juwan's performance was a little bit of an outlier. It'd be nonsensical to expect 100% catch rates and a TD conversion of such incredible style, even more considering Johnson played only 12 offensive snaps (19%). Even then, it's not that we haven't seen this type of production coming from tight ends... just look at Robert Tonyan's 2020 season. Don't rush to the WW to pick Johnson up, but consider him a relatively good streaming option in deeper leagues here and there.
