Jameis Winston 2021 Outlook: Fantasy Dream, Real-Life Nightmare
3 years agoAt this point, we have no idea who is going to start at quarterback for the Saints in 2021. Consensus seems to be that it will be Jameis Winston, but when Drew Brees went down last year, it was Taysom Hill under center. If Winston does get the nod, it's hard to envision him not being a fantasy viable starter. In 2019, Winston led the league in passing yards with 5,109 and threw 33 touchdowns. He averaged 20.5 ppg and finished as the QB8. The Saints' passing game weapons are certainly better off with Winston throwing them the ball. The problem with Winston is he is an equal opportunity passer - meaning he distributes the ball evenly between his own team and the other team. Winston is the only quarterback in NFL history to throw for 30 touchdowns and 30 interceptions in the same season. If Winston can't get the turnovers under control, there is no way Sean Payton will put up with it. Winston had a whopping nine multi-interception games in 2019, five in which he threw three or more picks. If that persists, he will get benched. If Winston is named starter in time for your fantasy draft, he's a worthy late-round selection, but know full well that every week he starts could be his last.
8/30 Update: Winston was named the starter after the second preseason game. He is a high-end QB2 option, but, as we know, the turnovers are a problem and his weapons outside of Alvin Kamara leave much to be desired.
