Chuba Hubbard Could Cement Status As Backup Running Back Friday
3 years agoCarolina Panthers running back Chuba Hubbard should get plenty of opportunities to lock down the backup running back job in the final preseason game of the year Friday against the Steelers. Listed as the second-string halfback on the depth chart, Hubbard has been the team's starter during the first two preseason games, as the squad attempts to rest All-Pro Christian McCaffrey as much as possible. With fellow backups Reggie Bonnafon and Rodney Smith unable to practice, Hubbard has been the starter for each of the first two preseason games, tallying 19 total touches for 135 scrimmage yards. Another strong outing Friday against a Steelers defense expected to rest most of its starters would essentially cement the rookie's status as the backup to Christian McCaffrey heading into Week 1. If so, Hubbard would be the back to target as insurance for McCaffrey drafters.
