2021 Wyndham Championship - PGA DFS Overview

Sedgefield Country Club

7,127 Yards - Par 70 - Greens: Bermuda - Designer: Donald Ross

This little Donald Ross gem has been a presence on the professional circuit since the 1930's and has now played host to this event for 14 consecutive years. At just over 7,100 yards, length won't be an issue for the players this week (Henrik Stenson won here a few years ago without hitting his driver one time. Literally never hit driver all week!). Fairways and greens are the order of the day at Sedgefield. In true Ross fashion, these greens are some of the smallest on the PGA Tour schedule and do have tricky undulations, but this track routinely ranks as one of the easiest on the PGA Tour schedule.

It seems like we emphasize ball striking every week, but it is without a doubt crucial at Sedgefield. It's a bit of an outlier event in that I'm paying absolutely no attention to distance. I'll be focusing on ball strikers that are both accurate off the tee and precise with their irons on approach. J.T. Poston went bogey-free for the tournament in 2019 and Sneds dropped a 59 here a few years ago en route to victory. The winners over the past five years have been at least 21-under par and lots of birdies will be needed this week, so I'll also be searching for players that can go low.

High-Priced FanDuel DFS Plays

Webb Simpson ($12,100)

No surprise to see "Mr. Wyndham" here atop the FanDuel salary scale this week, as Webb has basically become synonymous with this tournament. Simply put, he's been dominant in this event. Simpson captured the Wyndham title back in 2011 and has been in hot pursuit of another in subsequent years. He hasn't finished outside the top-three in this event since 2016! In addition to the ultra-elite track record on this Ross layout, the Wake Forest alum comes in on the heels of a dazzling final-round 64 in last week's WGC-FedEx Cup St. Jude Invitational. His outing in Memphis was a nice follow-up to a top-20 result in the Open Championship and indicates Webb is finally finding his groove after an otherwise sub-par summer. Don't overthink this one, the only real reason to fade Simpson this week would be due to his expected popularity.

Hideki Matsuyama ($11,900)

From a statistical standpoint, everything fits for Hideki Matsuyama this week. This Sedgefield layout demands sharp iron play and Matsuyama is one of the best in the business. The Japanese superstar grades out first in the field in SG: Approach over the last 24 rounds. His history on this course confirms that this is a great fit, as he's went: MC-T11-T3 in three starts since 2016. My only slight concern with Hideki is narrative based - so take that for what it's worth - but I do worry about how much he has left in the tank after falling short of a medal in his home country two weeks ago only to then fly around the world and lose in two playoff holes last week in Memphis. All that after battling COVID in the leadup to the Olympics. These guys are consummate professionals - Hideki especially so - but that is a lot of baggage that he brings with him to Greensboro.

Louis Oosthuizen ($11,800)

I don't know if I ever remember Louis Oosthuizen playing this much in one season...the South African has historically been pretty choosy with his schedule, but he must be trying to milk this epic heater for all it's worth, as he's teeing it up yet again this week in Greensboro for what will be his first career start in the Wyndham Championship. Sedgefield, like basically any golf course in the world, figures to be a great fit for King Louis, as the guy is simply doing everything well at the moment. He ranks first in the field in SG: Total over the last 24 rounds and has posted an unbelievable three runner-up finishes over his last six starts. Therein lies the only rub with Oosthuizen...can he actually close one of these things out and win a tournament?

Russell Henley ($10,900)

Anytime sharp iron play is a priority, Russell Henley jumps to the top of the conversation. Henley certainly has his flaws as a player, but his Approach game has been a bankable asset for the better part of the last two years. He grades out eighth in the Wyndham field SG: Approach over the last 24 rounds and first over the last 50 rounds. That ball-striking ability has served him well both as of late and throughout the years at Sedgefield. The Georgia Bulldog has posted top-20 results in three of his last four and averaged +3.9 SG: Approach over his last five. This Ross layout has proven to be a nice fit for him, as he snagged a T9 in last year’s Wyndham and has played the weekend in three of four career trips to Sedgefield.

Mid-Priced FanDuel DFS Plays

Seamus Power ($10,400)

It's always interesting to see how guys handle success. Will they use it as a springboard to bigger things and better play or relax a bit and take a step back? You never really know how your average PGA Tour pro will react, so I'll be keeping a close eye on Seamus Power this week, a guy that's been something of a journeyman on the PGA Tour to this point in his career. Power capped off what's been a terrific summer of play with a win at the Barbasol last month and will be teeing it up for the first time since that victory this week in Greensboro. He has some experience at Sedgefield with ho-hum results, but if the Irishman can continue his sharp play of the last two months - especially the iron play that's helped him to an average of +3.6 SG: Approach over his last five tournaments - he'll have a chance to contend this week.

Kevin Kisner ($9,900)

It seems like several of this week's recommendations come with at least a tiny bit of reluctance. Kevin Kisner is another that falls into that category. The course fit at Sedgefield is perfect for him, as his sterling track record in the Wyndham reflects. Kiz logged a T3 in last year's edition and has two additional career top-10s on the Ross layout. After a disappointing year, the South Carolinian appeared to be finding his form recently with a top-five at the Travelers and a T8 at the Rocket Mortgage the following week. However, Kisner has went the other direction in his most recent outings, mustering just a T73 at the Open and a T63 last week in Memphis, where he lost a hard-to-fathom 9.3 strokes on Approach. So...the course fit, history, and a not-to-long-ago flash of form say we should give him serious consideration in this spot, but those recent performances at the Open and WGC do cast a little doubt on the play for me.

Brandt Snedeker ($9,800)

At just over 7,100 yards, the light hitter can play his natural game on this golf course: fairways, greens, and great putting. He dropped a little 59 in the 2018 Wyndham Championship en route to victory and has two additional top-five finishes on his impressive Sedgefield resume. Snedeker’s recent form has been good enough (top-20s in two of his last three starts) to justify giving him a serious look this week.

Charl Schwartzel ($9,700)

Schwartzel is very similar to the aforementioned Snedeker in that he was at one time a truly elite player, winning the 2011 Masters and winning 10+ times internationally. Unfortunately, the last few years have been rough for the South African, but he's appeared to turn a corner with his game as of late, making the cut in 10 of his last 11 starts with a runner-up at the Byron Nelson and a T3 at the 3M Open being among the highlights. The still-just-36-year-old has been doing it with impressive iron play and he's now gained strokes in eight of nine starts since the Masters. He posted a T3 at Sedgefield back in 2015 and his trending form indicates he could make another deep run this year.

Low-Priced FanDuel DFS Players

Mito Pereira ($9,500)

I always love jumping on these young players early, as it is a great way to add value to your DFS lineups. Usually, the sportsbooks and DFS sites take a little time to adjust to these guys (though it happens much faster now than it used to!) which gives us a chance to grab uber-talented golfers at great prices. One such player is young Mito Pereira. The 26-year-old Chilean has taken the Korn Ferry Tour by storm this season, earning the extremely rare "battlefield promotion" thanks to his three victories on that circuit. He's wasted no time making his presence known on the PGA Tour, making the cut in his last four starts with a pair of top-six finishes. Pereira was also in a seven-man playoff for the bronze medal in the recent Olympic games. He's a strong overall player and has gained strokes both T2G and on Approach in each of his last three outings.

Patton Kizzire ($9,100)

Kizzire is kind of a statistical anomaly in that he's always erratic and unpredictable when it comes to Strokes Gained stats, but at the end of the day, he leads this field in Birdies or Better Gained. Weird right? Anyway, if we throw stats out the window, Kizzire certainly pops at this $9.1k price tag thanks to that ability to go low at anytime. I prefer him on courses that aren't driver heavy and he'll be able to hit three-wood and irons throughout the week on this Sedgefield layout. The fit is reflected in his Wyndham track record, as he's made cut in all four career starts with a pair of top-25s.

Roger Sloan ($8,100)

As we move down the salary scale slam-dunk statistical plays are harder to find, but Roger Sloan sticks out at this cheap price tag for a couple of reasons, namely his recent form and his track record in the Wyndham. Sloan heads to Greensboro on the heels of solid performances at both the Barbasol and the 3M Open, events where he gained strokes both T2G and on Approach. His history at Sedgefield is also rock solid, as he's went T31-T39 in his two previous Wyndham starts.
