4 years agoThe Washington Nationals placed starting pitcher Joe Ross (elbow) on the 10-day injured list on Thursday with right elbow inflammation and recalled right-hander Ryne Harper from Triple-A Rochester in a corresponding move. It's bad timing for the Nationals and fantasy managers, as Ross had a 2.31 ERA and 0.95 WHIP in 39 innings over his last six starts. Manager Dave Martinez is hoping that Ross will wind up missing just one start with the All-Star break coming next week. Overall, the 28-year-old righty is 5-8 with a 4.02 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 91 strikeouts in 87 1/3 innings over 16 starts. Paolo Espino will make his fifth start of the season against the San Francisco Giants on Friday. Espino has good numbers this year, but he has a low strikeout rate and is due for some regression, so he'll be a shaky deep-league or DFS streaming option.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBaller

3 months agoThe Philadelphia Phillies agreed to a one-year deal worth $4 million with free-agent right-hander Joe Ross on Monday, according to sources. Ross is expected to serve in a swing role for the Phillies as both a starter and reliever in 2025 after he went 3-6 with a 3.77 ERA (3.83 FIP), a 1.36 WHIP and a 66:29 K:BB in 74 innings over 25 appearances (10 starts) with the Milwaukee Brewers in 2024. The 31-year-old veteran hurler essentially takes the place of Spencer Turnbull, who remains on the open market. Ross will only be worth considering as a fantasy streamer in deeper fantasy leagues and DFS contests if he's starting, but it will be more likely that most of his appearances in Philly will come in a relief role. He was better as a reliever last year with a 1.98 WHIP and 24.1% strikeout rate compared to an ERA just south of 5.00 with an 18.7% K rate as a starter.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBaller

10 months agoMilwaukee Brewers right-hander Joe Ross (back) recently had a setback in his recovery from a lower-back strain. Manager Pat Murphy said the team was hoping Ross could return from the 15-day injured list by June 17, but that won't happen now. The Brewers have already used 11 starting pitchers this season, and pitching prospect Robert Gasser (elbow) is likely joining Brandon Woodruff and Wade Miley as pitchers lost for the rest of the year. The 31-year-old Ross is without a timetable to resume a throwing program and most likely won't be back now before the All-Star break in mid-July. He's been out since late May and has gone 2-4 with a 4.50 ERA, 1.38 WHIP and 35:16 K:BB in his nine starts in 2024. Jakob Junis (shoulder) and DL Hall (knee) should be candidates to join Milwaukee's rotation soon, with Junis' return potentially right around the corner.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBaller

10 months agoMilwaukee Brewers starting pitcher Joe Ross (back) has reportedly suffered a setback while rehabbing. The hope was that Ross would be able to return to the team around mid-June. After this news, Ross is unlikely to be back until at least some time in July. He still needs to go on a minor league rehab assignment as well. It's possible that Chris Rodriguez sticks in the starting rotation for a few more turns.--Andy Webb - RotoBaller

11 months agoThe Milwaukee Brewers officially placed right-hander Joe Ross (back) on the 15-day injured list on Tuesday with a lower-back strain and recalled right-hander Tobias Myers from Triple-A Nashville in a corresponding move. It was reported that Ross was likely heading to the IL on Monday night after he was forced to leave his start against the Miami Marlins after just one inning due to back tightness. It's something that has been bothering the 31-year-old veteran for a while, so fantasy managers in deeper leagues shouldn't be expecting him to return from the IL when eligible. Myers should be the first option to hold Ross' rotation spot for however long he's sidelined. In his first nine starts of 2024, Ross is 2-4 with a 4.50 ERA and 1.38 WHIP with 16 walks and 35 strikeouts in 42 innings pitched.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBaller
