Cubs Sign Robinson Chirinos
3 years agoThe Chicago Cubs signed catcher Robinson Chirinos to an undisclosed one-year major league deal on Monday and designated catcher Taylor Gushue for assignment in a corresponding move. Chirinos is active for the team's game on Monday and will immediately serve as the backup to Willson Contreras. The 37-year-old will give the Cubbies an experienced backup. He has yet to play in 2020, but Chirinos had 26 combined games with the Texas Rangers and New York Mets last year, hitting just .162/.232/243 with a homer and seven RBI in 74 at-bats. Chirinos might become an option in deep two-catcher leagues, but only if Contreras were forced to miss extended time due to an injury.
