Spencer Torkelson To Play In Futures Game
3 years agoDetroit Tigers corner infielder Spencer Torkelson was named to this year's All-Star Futures Game that will be played at Coors Field on July 11. Torkelson was the top pick in last year's draft and is ranked by MLB Pipeline as the No. 3 prospect in the game this year. The 21-year-old hit .312/.440/.569 with five home runs, 28 RBI and three steals in 31 games for High-A West Michigan before getting the call-up to Double-A Erie, where he's slashed .239/.321/.478 with three home runs and nine RBI in just 12 games. There's a reason Torkelson was a first overall pick: He has a special bat and can hit for average and power from the right side. He also knows how to work walks, as evidenced by his 37:29 strikeout-to-walk ratio in the minors. Torkelson has improved his work at third base, which will only maximize his offensive value. There's a chance we could see him in the big leagues as soon as next year.
