James Kaprielian Providing Spark In A's Rotation
James Kaprielian posted another quality start on Tuesday as he continues to be just what the A's - and fantasy managers - need from their starting pitchers. Kaprielian has pitched at least five innings and allowed three runs or less in eight of his nine starts this season, good for a 3.06 ERA. It hasn't just been run-prevention where Kaprielian has thrived. The 27-year-old has 52 strikeouts in 50 innings while limiting baserunners as he's got a strong 1.10 WHIP. Best of all, Kaprielian is earning this success as he's got a CSW (called-plus-swinging strikes) rate over 30 percent and he's earning swinging strikes at a healthy 11.2 percent rate. He should be started in all fantasy leagues in a home matchup with the Red Sox.

James Kaprielian Outrighted By A's
James Kaprielian (shoulder), left-hander Sam Long and catcher Carlos Perez to Triple-A Las Vegas on Thursday. Kaprielian cleared waivers after he was on the 60-day injured list this year following surgery to fix the posterior labrum in his right shoulder in August. It remains to be seen if the 29-year-old will be ready to go for the start of spring training in 2024. In 14 outings (11 starts) before his injury in 2023, Kaprielian went 2-6 with a rough 6.34 ERA (5.08 FIP), 1.59 WHIP, 31 walks and 57 strikeouts in 61 innings pitched in his fourth big-league season with the A's. He has a career 4.61 ERA (4.67 FIP), 1.35 WHIP and 282 K's in 66 outings (58 starts) in his four seasons in the majors.

James Kaprielian Undergoes Season-Ending Surgery
James Kaprielian (shoulder) underwent successful right shoulder surgery on Wednesday. The right-hander is done for the season and is likely to miss time in 2024 as well. He was rehabbing his shoulder injury, but has decided to undergo arthroscopic surgery to repair a labrum injury. Before that, Kaprielian held a rough 6.34 ERA. 1.59 WHIP and 57/31 K/BB ratio through 11 starts with the A's. The expectation is that he'll be back in early 2024.

James Kaprielian Throws Bullpen Saturday
James Kaprielian (shoulder) threw a 35-pitch bullpen session on Saturday, but there currently is no timetable for his return from a strained right shoulder. Right-hander Mason Miller (elbow) was also scheduled to throw all fastballs on Saturday after progressing from playing long toss to throwing off flat ground. The next step for both Kaprielian and Miller is to face live hitters before potentially going on minor-league rehab assignments. Miller is attempting to return from a UCL sprain he suffered in early May. When healthy, both Kaprielian and Miller should return to starting-rotation spots with the last-place A's, but that's probably not going to come until early August.

Mason Miller, James Kaprielian To Throw Saturday
Mason Miller (elbow) and James Kaprielian (shoulder) will both throw off flat ground on Saturday. Miller, a 24-year-old rookie, is trying to return from a sprained UCL that put him on the injured list in May. Before the injury, he had impressed in his first four big-league starts, allowing eight earned runs on 14 hits while walking seven and striking out 22 in 21 1/3 innings. He will be a rotation option for the A's and fantasy managers in the second half. Kaprielian is dealing with a right-shoulder strain and received a cortisone injection earlier this month. There is no timetable for either pitcher's return to Oakland. Kaprielian has a rough 6.34 ERA (5.10 FIP), 1.59 WHIP, 31 walks and 57 K's in 14 outings (11 starts) over 61 innings in 2023.
