NASCAR Rankings Analysis
Welcome to Pocono! We've got a doubleheader weekend, which will be fun! The Cup Series on Saturday and then the Cup Series also on Sunday?
There's a clear top two this week.
Kyle Larson starts on the pole and has finished either first or second in six consecutive races. He's led 648 laps in the past three races, which is 81.8 percent of the laps in that span. Larson could have another dominant victory in which he leads the majority of the laps and racks up a big fantasy score, though it should be noted that this is only 130 laps, so there's not a ton of laps led/fastest laps available. I mean, five times this season, Larson has led over 130 laps.
The other top play is Chase Elliott. Hendrick Motorsports is on a hot streak, but last week Elliott was disqualified. The way the qualifying formula is set means that Elliott winds up stating 29th, which is going to offer a ton of place differential upside. That does come at the expense of potential laps led, but with 130 laps this week, I think targeting place differential is a smart move.
It's why I'm also high on the following drivers this week: Cole Custer, Ryan Blaney, and Chase Briscoe. Good cars that start deep in the pack -- I'll have some of all of them in my lineups.
Alex Bowman hasn't been as dominant as his Hendrick teammates, but he starts 13th this week, offering some decent possible PD points.
There are also some names starting near the front that I'll mostly be avoiding. Ross Chastain was great last week, but he starts sixth. Based on his results this year, I'm not taking on the risk of playing him. Ricky Stenhouse Jr. in seventh is in the same boat. I'm a little higher on Kurt Busch, who starts eighth, but I still won't have a ton of him.
Last year's winners here were Kevin Harvick and Denny Hamlin. That Harvick win ended a five race win streak for Toyotas at Pocono. I think there's solid upside from all the Joe Gibbs cars this week, aside from maybe Christopher Bell.
Chris Buescher rates high in a lot of projections, with the ones we use having him as a top 10 play. I'm more cautious on him this week, ranking him 13th on both sites. Some good PD upside, but I think his 2016 win here gets him a boost in some computer projections when it probably doesn't need to. He's probably about a 15th place driver this week, albeit one with some upside.
In terms of a deeper sleeper, Corey LaJoie is interesting. Spire has found some speed for the 7 car, and LaJoie has four top 20s in a row. He starts 23rd, which might be a tad too high, but could go overlooked, and last week he finished 15th. This track might not suit him as well, but there's still some upside.
