Gary Woodland Knows How To Play Torrey Pines
4 years agoIf anyone in the field knows Torrey Pines, it's Gary Woodland. Woodland will be making his 13th career start at Torrey Pines, and he hasn't missed a Farmers Insurance Open cut since 2010. What might be more incredible than Woodland making 13 starts at Torrey is the fact he has made 12 cuts. Woodland has only missed one cut at Torrey Pines, and that was last year. From 2016-2019, Woodland finished no worse than 20th at Torrey Pines, recording a best finish of ninth in 2019. Woodland isn't having a great 2021 season, but he has made three of his last four cuts, including two top-15 finishes in that span. He won't struggle with distance this week, as he averages well over 300 yards off the tee, so Woodland is worth considering this week in all contests.

Gary Woodland Showing Great Form Ahead Of Valero Texas Open
2 weeks agoIt was an inspiring week in Houston for Gary Woodland, who posted a final-round 62 on Sunday to leap into a T2 finish. This was the highest finish the former Jayhawk has had since returning from brain surgery 18 months ago. He had been showing signs of form all season, as he ranks fourth in driving distance (315.2) and 12th in proximity to the hole (34 feet, six inches). His strokes-gained metrics haven't necessarily been there, though, as his 46th ranking in strokes gained on approach (plus-0.389) is his highest ranking. He should be licking his chops coming to TPC San Antonio after finishing T6 and T8 in his last two starts in this event, especially if his dominant putting we saw at Memorial Park continues -- he gained 8.72 strokes. At $10,000 on FanDuel, Woodland seems to be peaking at a very opportune time.

Gary Woodland A Dark-Horse Candidate At Houston Open
3 weeks agoGary Woodland has had an up-and-down 2025 season thus far. He finished top 25 in his first three starts and has missed the cut in three of his last four. In last week's Valspar Championship, he finished tied for 47th. At Memorial this week, players who hit the ball long off the tee will have an advantage. The course measures approximately 7,500 yards and can play longer if wind is present. Woodland is no stranger to crushing the ball off the tee, where he ranks fourth in driving distance. Just under 33% of approach shots will come from 200+ yards this week, where he also excels. He ranks fourth in approach shots of >200 yards. However, players will need to be savvy around the greens, where he has struggled, ranking 136th in strokes gained around the green. Woodland may not be the safest play, but could be a true wild card this week.

Gary Woodland Aiming For Bounce-Back Performance At PGA National
2 months agoPrior to missing the cut at the Genesis Invitational, Gary Woodland had posted three straight top-22 finishes to start the year. He now looks to get back on track at the Cognizant Classic, an event where he has missed the cut just once in 10 appearances, with four career top-10 finishes. Woodland has gained the majority of his strokes this season off the tee (7.504) but has also been impressive on approach, gaining 0.421 strokes per round. Given the challenging nature of PGA National, this part of his game will be crucial for success. Woodland ranks in the 94th percentile for greens in regulation from 150-200 yards and in the 80th percentile for proximity from the same distance, which accounts for 48.1% of all approach shots at this course. This is especially important for Woodland, as he has lost 3.984 strokes combined in putting and around the green. At $7,500 on DraftKings, Woodland presents solid value and could be a core piece in any DFS lineup.
