Tyrrell Hatton Trending In The Right Direction
3 years agoTyrrell Hatton is coming off a second-place finish at the Palmetto Championship, where he gained a whopping 4.9 strokes off the tee and 6.9 strokes on approach. This was Hatton's best approach week since the CJ Cup in October, and his best week off the tee since the 2019 British Open. In fact, he actually would have won that tournament if he was able to putt to field average. Hatton does possess a skill set that should translate nicely to Torrey Pines. While the former Arnold Palmer Invitational champion is by no means a bomber, he makes up for his lack of distance with elite long-iron play, as Hatton ranks third in this field in proximity from 200-plus yards in his last 36 rounds. It will all come down to the putter with Hatton, but there is reason for optimism, as Torrey Pines features Poa Annua greens, which have historically been his strongest surface. Hatton is a very sensible play this week.
