Matt Manning Expected To Start On Thursday
Matt Manning has been added to the Tigers' taxi squad and is expected to get the start on Thursday night, according to Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press. The top pitching prospect in Detroit's system, Manning has struggled a bit this year with a 1-3 record and 8.07 ERA with 36 strikeouts over 32 1/3 innings of work at Triple-A Toledo. With a career 29.8 percent strikeout rate over five seasons in the minors, he'll be an interesting guy to pick up off the waiver wire and start against the Angels on Thursday.

Matt Manning Has Unclear Role Heading Into Spring Training
Matt Manning has an unclear role heading into spring training. Beck noted that while Manning has typically been deployed as a starter, he may have to shift to a bullpen role to have a spot on the MLB roster. Currently, Tarik Skubal, Jack Flaherty, Reese Olson, and Alex Cobb all have a spot in the rotation which leaves just one spot during spring training. Top prospect Jackson Jobe has been viewed as the "favorite" to land it, but Kenta Maeda, Casey Mize, and Manning could stake their claim for that spot. Fantasy managers should continue monitoring Manning's progression during spring training, as it will likely clarify his role at the start of the season. Last summer, he logged only 27 2/3 innings in the majors and posted a high 4.88 ERA with a 1.55 WHIP.

Casey Mize, Matt Manning Could Shift To Bullpen Role
Casey Mize and Matt Manning could shift to bullpen roles during the 2025 season. While both pitchers will report to camp as starters, they could have an uphill battle to earn a spot in the Opening Day rotation. On Sunday evening, the team signed Jack Flaherty to a two-year contract. In addition, Stevenhagen noted that the team would like their top prospect, Jackson Jobe, to begin the season in the rotation. However, if he struggles during spring training, that could open up the final spot for Mize or Manning. Last season, Mize logged 102 1/3 innings in the majors and held a 4.49 ERA with a 1.47 WHIP. He struck out just 17.3 percent of the batters he faced. Manning logged only 27 2/3 innings in the big leagues as he spent most of his summer in Triple-A. Fantasy managers should continue to monitor Jobe's development, as it will likely provide clarity to the back end of the Detroit rotation.

Matt Manning Hits Triple-A Injured List
Matt Manning (lat) was placed on the minor league 7-day IL on Friday, July 19, with a right lat strain. The 26-year-old has spent the majority of the 2024 campaign with Triple-A Toledo and has only logged five spot starts at the major league level. Through 59 ⅔ innings a Triple-A, the former ninth overall pick has posted a 4.53 ERA, 1.31 WHIP, and a 22:60 BB:K ratio. In the big leagues, he held a similar 4.88 ERA and 1.55 WHIP through 27 innings. The right-hander is a candidate to return to the major leagues later this summer and could be worth a look in AL-only formats, but he may have to wait until the stretch run due to this injury setback.

Matt Manning To Start On Friday
Matt Manning will make the start against the Toronto Blue Jays on Friday. It was uncertain what the team was going to do with Kenta Maeda (illness) nearing a return. The plan is for Maeda to throw on Wednesday or Thursday. After that, the Tigers will determine what to do depending on how he feels. For now, Manning will stick in the rotation and make at least one more start. Although, Manning isn't a great streaming option against the tough Blue Jays lineup.
