Brooks Koepka Is An Obvious Choice At Torrey Pines
3 years agoFinding reasons not to play Brooks Koepka at a U.S. Open feels like grasping for straws. Koepka has played in seven U.S. Opens in his career, and he has recorded six top-20s, four top-fives, a runner-up and back-to-back wins in 2017 and 2018. Form is not something to consider too much with Koepka, either. He won the Phoenix Open earlier this year after missing four consecutive cuts. He missed back-to-back cuts directly before finishing as the runner-up last month at the PGA, so his missed cut at the Palmetto Championship should not deter fantasy managers from choosing the four-time Major champion. Koepka clearly does his best work on long and difficult courses, ranking fourth in this field in strokes gained in ball-striking on courses measuring over 7,400 yards. Despite two missed cuts and a 41st in three appearances at Torrey Pines for the Farmers Insurance Open, a USGA setup plays far more into Koekpa's hands than a PGA Tour one. Many fantasy managers will look to start their fantasy lineups with Koepka, and while pivoting in GPPs is understandable, it's hard to argue with the play in any format.
