Jose Alvarado's Control Makes Him Hard To Trust
4 years agoPhiladelphia Phillies relief pitcher Jose Alvarado is one of the best relievers in baseball when he's on, but bouts with wildness make the flame-thrower difficult to rely on in fantasy. Alvarado is among the hardest throwers in the game. His 100-plus MPH sinker is elite and almost always induces weak contact and ground balls when batters can get lumber on it. That's when batters aren't whiffing as the lefty is sporting a strong 31.6% CSW-rate which has led to plenty of strikeouts. The issue for Alvarado is walks. He's handed out 22 free passes in 21 1/3 innings this year. In fact, Alvarado's walk rate of 21.8 percent is the worst mark for qualified relievers since 1984. If he gets the walks under control, he can be an elite arm in fantasy. Until then, he's a blow-up outing waiting to happen and tough to trust in fantasy lineups.
