RotoBaller PGA: One And Done Staff Picks - Palmetto Championship

The PGA RotoBaller staff digs into their One and Done selections for the Palmetto Championship. Here are some under-the-radar plays and picks for this week's event.

One And Done Staff Picks Overview

Here at RotoBaller, we are always searching for ways to give our readers the best fantasy sports content possible. With that goal in mind, we are very proud to announce the weekly PGA “One and Done” column will be back for a third season.

In this feature, our golf staff of Joe Nicely, Spencer Aguiar, Andrew Putters and Josh Bennett will provide their weekly golf picks every Wednesday. The purpose of this article is to present you with alternative options to consider and hopefully make your selection a much easier process weekly. With that plan in mind, let's get started!

For an in-depth breakdown of the top DraftKings and FanDuel plays, check out Joe Nicely's weekly Horse For The Course that highlights the best fits for the week's course. And you can also find out who the smart money is on by checking out Spencer Aguiar's PGA DFS: Vegas Report every week. Be sure to also read all of our other top-notch weekly PGA DFS and betting articles to help you win big!

One and Done Selections - Palmetto Championship

Joe Nicely - Ian Poulter

Alternate - Jon Pak

Unfortunately, the Memorial was another bust for Team J-Nice, though it was a cool gesture by Hideki Matsuyama to completely tank the final round in solidarity with Jon Rahm (that’s what I’m telling myself happened, anyway).

We now head from an elevated status event with an elite field, to a one-off, Canadian Open replacement with a field of entrants - bar a couple of elite players - that would be right at home in the Bermuda Championship.

Despite the “bomber’s paradise” narrative that seems to be a popular take for this week’s Palmetto Championship at Congaree, something tells me that a cagey veteran will make a run on this unique Fazio design that is more Royal Melbourne than TPC Craig Ranch. Maybe it’s because I turned 40 earlier this year or maybe it’s because Phil Mickelson recently won the PGA Championship on a Kiawah Island layout that’s at least a cousin to Congaree, but I’ve got a newfound respect for the guys on Tour that have been to the puppet show and seen the strings.

One thing that experience has taught me is to never underestimate Ian Poulter in a Ryder Cup year, and sure enough, the Englishman has picked up his production over the last two months by flirting with top-25 finishes in both the Masters and the PGA Championship, as well as logging a T3 in his most recent start at the Charles Schwab Challenge. His veteran experience should help him to navigate a Congaree track that is expected to play firm and fast, while his sneaky explosiveness (10th in field Birdies or Better Gained) provides upside that might go overlooked in OAD contests this week.

Spencer Aguiar - Harris English

Alternate - Alex Noren

The way the Palmetto Championship looks on paper, I believe this is an optimal time for me to put some chips in my back pocket and store the ammunition for later when I need it coming down the stretch. I have made it no secret that my strategy was to get an early lead and attempt to hold on for dear life in the final few months of this contest, but it has put me in a slightly precarious situation where I am running out of players towards the top-end of the spectrum.

While all of that will make upcoming weeks more and more of a challenge, I am happy to be able to pencil in Harris English, who I have rated as my second-best fit for Congaree Golf Club in the entire field. English grades out an impressive first in my two-year rolling model in par-five scoring and comes in second when looking at scrambling, overall birdie or better percentage and firm/fast putting over the last 50 rounds. At the end of the day, the best three names left on my entire board are likely Dustin Johnson, Brooks Koepka and Tyrrell Hatton, and while they are the favorites in this particular field and possible winners when all is said and done, I think it makes logical sense to save each for a different event later in the season.

Yearly Earnings - $7,342,372

Yearly Cuts Made - 18/22

Josh Bennett - Tyrrell Hatton

Alternate - Vincent Whaley

I imagine Hatton will be a popular pick this week in this contest and across any other OAD contests, but the “don’t overthink it” method says that is probably for good reason. He doesn’t play in a ton of US events outside of the majors, and we especially don’t see him in events with a field as weak as this one. He’s going to be available in a ton of leagues for that reason and it’s a perfect time to play him. It is pretty easy to look past the two big guns in DJ and Brooks this week as their motivation-to-win levels could seemingly be low heading into the US Open, especially if they don’t start off great. Hatton is the next best player in the field. He’s relatively long off the tee, his overall driving game is great and he’s a fantastic ball-striker. That should work out perfectly on this long and wide-open golf course. He’s historically been a decent putter and his short game is starting to come around, so he really has all of the facets of the game working right now. Of the few elites in the field, I think Hatton is best positioned to take this event down and I think this pick is a no-brainer.

Yearly Earnings -$2,763,852

Yearly Cuts Made - 15/22

Andrew Putters - Matthew Fitzpatrick

Alternate - Kevin Kisner

This tournament is basically an unknown.  The course is only 4 fours old and we only know what we know.  The course superintendent has all the accolades from several different well-known courses.  So the course will be in perfect shape for the players.  Also, the course is long but is going to play hard and fast. This is why I am leaning toward Matty Fitzpatrick this week.  We all know that Fitz is great around the greens and a very good putter.  A little less known fact right now is that his ball-striking has been top of the line in recent rounds.  Fitzpatrick is 5th in SG off the tee and 9th in SG ball striking in this field.  Putting the ball in play off the tee is the first step to scoring well this weekend at Congaree.

Yearly Earnings - $5,408,308

Yearly Cuts Made - 18/22
