One and Done Selections - Valero Texas Open
Joe Nicely - Corey Conners
Alternate - Chris Kirk
Well...we know that match play can be a fickle beast and that proved to be the case with Paul Casey last week in Austin. Obviously, the Englishman’s early exit wasn’t the result I wanted, but I’m also buoyed a bit by the fact that I didn’t waste one of my “big guns” in an event that’s so unpredictable.
Turning attention to this week’s Valero Texas Open, even if I wanted to fire a “big gun”, there aren’t that many in the field to choose from. As a result, I’m rolling with what feels like a “no brainer” in Corey Conners. The Canadian won at TPC San Antonio in 2019 and is the official defending champ (the 2020 Valero was canceled due to COVID). I’m actually really high on his chances to go back-to-back in this event. Conners leads this week’s field in Strokes Gained: T2G, Total, & Ball Striking over the last 24 rounds. TPC San Antonio is notoriously a ball-strikers paradise and obviously a great fit for him - he won the Valero in 2019 - so I expect to see another strong performance from the Canadian this week.

Spencer Aguiar - Corey Conners
Alternate - Ryan Palmer
I originally planned on taking Scottie Scheffler for this event when I tried to map out my season in January, but the lengthy stay at the Match Play will have me deviating a little off-script.
I think the level of aggression that you will need to take will be decided by how many participants and how much ground you need to make up on the field for a tournament like the Valero Texas Open, but I feel comfortable rolling out Corey Conners, who arguably will be the highest owned player on the slate this week.
Conners and I have good vibes at this event, as I was able to pinpoint him at 250/1 two years ago, and I believe his elite ball-striking nature should give him another chance to churn out a top-10 performance - perhaps even having a chance to go back-to-back. Sometimes conservative is the way to go, and it should help to open up my player pool a little bit for the robust run of tournaments we have coming up over the next few months.

Josh Bennett - Charley Hoffman
Alternate - Scottie Scheffler
The “don’t overthink it” method has served me well 2 weeks in a row now, so on this week’s edition of “don’t overthink it”, we are rolling with the guy who literally has a t-shirt made with his name replacing the name of this tournament with his winnings. I’ll throw you some stats if you want them, but maybe the most important stat is the one on his T-SHIRT? Anyway, aside from his mini-back injury, he’s been playing really good golf this season. Since the injury, two top ten’s and another top 20 heading to a place where he has a win, two runner-ups, a third, and three other finishes in the top 13 since 2011. What other stats do you need? Good form, good history, don’t overthink it. Charley Hoffman at the Charley Hoffman Open.
Yearly Earnings - $995,100
Yearly Cuts Made - 9/13
Andrew Putters - Chris Kirk
Alternate - Corey Conners
You all know I love me some Chris Kirk. I love even more this week matching up on this field. We just need to get the putter a little hot. This course is going to take some power off the tee and good iron play. Chris Kirk has all tools necessary to win at the TPC San Antonio. He’s my heart play of the week this week, and you can still find him at 35/1 in some spots.
