Texas Rangers catcher Jose Trevino will open the 2021 season as the No. 1 catcher for the club but he will likely be pushed all season long by a pair of young backstops. Jonah Heim, acquired from Oakland in the offseason, and Sam Huff both have the potential to be bat-first contributors at the MLB level while Trevino is known more for his defensive skills. Last season, he produced an 89 wRC+ but 10 of his 19 hits went for extra bases. He has limited fantasy value -- even in two-catcher leagues -- unless his power continues to improve or he has another offensive breakthrough in another area.--Marc Hulet - RotoBaller

Cincinnati Reds catcher Jose Trevino will take a seat on the bench for the start of the second game of the series on Tuesday against the division-rival St. Louis Cardinals at Great American Ball Park. Austin Wynns is behind the plate to catch right-hander Brady Singer and will bat ninth against Cardinals right-hander Miles Mikolas. Trevino will get a day to rest after starting each of the last three games. The 32-year-old veteran backstop hit his second home run of the season on Monday night and has exceeded expectations early on in 2025 by going 20-for-62 (.323) with six RBI and 14 runs scored as Cincy's primary catcher with Tyler Stephenson (oblique) on the injured list. Trevino will remain worthwhile in deep two-catcher leagues until Stephenson returns. Wynns has gone 13-for-30 with three homers and 11 RBI as Trevino's backup, so the Reds have gotten plenty of production from their two catchers early on.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBaller

The Cincinnati Reds have signed catcher Jose Trevino to an extension. His contract is now worth up to $15 million and will be three years in length. During the offseason, the Reds acquired Trevino from the New York Yankees in exchange for relief pitcher Fernando Cruz and Alex Jackson. Last season in New York, Trevino posted a .215/.288/.354 slash line with eight home runs and one stolen base across 74 contests. He generated a modest .267 xwOBA but was an excellent defender, placing him in the 95th percentile in framing and 88th percentile in Blocks Above Average. Fantasy managers should expect Trevino to typically operate as the No. 2 option behind in the plate. However, the top option, Tyler Stephenson (oblique), will open the season on the 10-day injured list, which will provide Trevino more opportunities early in the campaign.--Andy Smith - RotoBaller

Cincinnati Reds catcher Jose Trevino (hand) is undergoing a CT scan on his right hand on Saturday. Trevino suffered this injury during Friday's spring training contest. Fantasy managers should continue to monitor his status as he could be at risk of missing the start of the regular season if this injury is serious. The Reds are already going to be without top backstop Tyler Stephenson (oblique) during the start of the regular season. The Reds acquired Trevino in a trade from the New York Yankees earlier in the offseason. Last season, the 32-year-old posted a .215/.288/.354 slash line with eight home runs. If Trevino were to miss the start of the regular season, fantasy managers should expect Austin Wynns to move up to the top of the depth chart.--Andy Smith - RotoBaller

Cincinnati Reds catcher Jose Trevino (hand) exited Friday's spring training contest early after a foul tip hit him on his hand. Fantasy managers should continue to monitor his status as the team has yet to provide information on the severity of the injury. This is also not a good sign as top catcher Tyler Stephenson (oblique) is set to begin the season on the injured list. The Reds acquired Trevino earlier in the offseason in a trade from the Yankees in exchange for Fernando Cruz and Alex Jackson. Last season in the Bronx, the 32-year-old backstop posted a .215/.288/.354 line with five doubles and eight long balls. He showed a strong eye at the plate, holding a 17.5 percent strikeout rate. If Trevino were to miss time, fantasy managers should expect Austin Wynns to operate as the No. 1 backstop.--Andy Smith - RotoBaller
