Jake Bauers Will Be Opening Day First Baseman
4 years agoCleveland Indians first baseman Jake Bauers has won the starting job and will be the Opening Day first baseman, The Athletic's Zack Meisel reports. Bauers was competing with prospect Bobby Bradley for the starting job at first this spring, and despite Bradley (.303/.314/.636) outperforming Bauers (.200/.429/.280), Bradley was the odd man out by virtue of still having a minor league option left. Once a top prospect in the Rays' system, Bauers has not looked impressive in two seasons at the major league level. He hit .226 with a .683 OPS in 2019 with Cleveland, and then did not make an appearance with the team in 2020. This year could be when Bauers finally puts it all together, but for now managers can safely avoid him in all but the deepest of AL-only formats.
