Chris Bassitt Named Opening Day Starter For Oakland
4 years agoOakland Athletics starting pitcher Chris Bassitt has been named the Opening Day starter, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports. Bassitt has looked sharp this spring, allowing just two runs in 10 1/3 innings while striking out 12. He is coming off a 2020 campaign in which he finished eighth in the AL Cy Young race by posting a 5-2 record and 2.29 ERA, with a 21.1 percent strikeout rate. Bassitt will take the mound against the Houston Astros to start 2021, after going 1-1 against them with a 2.65 ERA and 12.3 percent strikeout rate in three starts. There probably won't be much upside for Bassitt this time out, so managers may want to consider keeping him on the bench for Opening Day.
