One and Done Selections - WGC Match Play
Joe Nicely - Paul Casey
Alternate - Jason Day
With such a deficit in this OAD contest, I should probably be pulling out all the stops on a weekly basis. And while I like the paths laid out for both Dustin Johnson and Jon Rahm courtesy of the WGC-Dell Match Play bracket draw, I just can’t pull the trigger on either in what’s traditionally a highly-volatile format that often ushers out some of the biggest names in golf in surprisingly-early fashion.
Instead of using the nuclear option of DJ or Rahm, I’m going with a match-play veteran that’s in arguably the best form of his career at the moment. Paul Casey heads to Austin having nabbed a win at the Omega Dubai Desert Classic in January. He’s also been dazzling in four U.S. starts this year, posting two top-fives and two top-10s.
The Englishman's opening group consists of Webb Simpson, Mackenzie Hughes, and Talor Gooch. All fine players, but all players with match play resumes that pale in comparison to Casey, who boasts a 37-26-5 career match play record, while Simpson has been a surprisingly-mediocre match-play performer over the course of his career (10-12-4), and both Hughes and Gooch are making their debuts in this event. It’s a group from which I expect Casey to emerge. Though potentially-tough matches loom in the Round of 16 and Quarterfinals, I don’t know that Casey in his current form will be a huge underdog to anyone in this field.

Spencer Aguiar - Jordan Spieth
Alternate - Russell Henley
There are some weeks where not much of a write-up is needed. You might blame it on the quick turnaround and late posting of the article, but I say it has been something that has been brewing after three years of not selecting a particular golfer for this RotoBaller contest.
Without further ado, I am proud to announce that WE ARE PLAYING SPIETH!!!
No further write-up needed. Drop mic.
Corales Puntacana - Charley Hoffman
Alternate - Emiliano Grillo
I've done zero research for this tournament, but I do like the way Charley Hoffman has been playing. It doesn't hurt that he is a UNLV Runnin' Rebel either.
Yearly Earnings - $6,209,038
Yearly Cuts Made - 10/11
Josh Bennett - Jon Rahm
Alternate - Viktor Hovland
Alright, I might have found my groove last week with my “don’t overthink, just play” method. Or maybe it was a fluke. Whatever it is, I’m going to try it again this week. I think there are two obvious players this week that have an “easier” route than others through to at least the semi’s, those two being DJ and Rahm, so I’m not looking farther than that. It’s a toss-up for me really, they’re both obviously the elite of the elite in this event and have less competitive pools than others, but the reason I go Rahm over DJ is part recent form and part saving DJ for another event I have my eye on. Rahm has been running hot recently and a win is not far away. He has a pretty good match play record (57% wins) so I think he has a really good chance to take this whole thing down and keep pushing me back into this competition.
Corales Puntacana - Emiliano Grillo
Yearly Earnings - $553,100
Yearly Cuts Made - 7/11
Andrew Putters - Jon Rahm
Alternate - Collin Morikawa
John Rahm just makes too much sense on paper. First of all, we know he is a top-notch player. He has gone the distance in this tournament before. We stated on “The Turn” this week that Rahm has the easiest path to the finals. He will have a harder time getting out of pool play than he will making it to the final four.
Corales Puntacana - Patrick Rodgers
Yearly Earnings - $3,830,890
Yearly Cuts Made - 8/11
