Seattle Mariners starting pitcher Justus Sheffield made his second-to-last start of the spring Monday, building up to 78 pitches. Sheffield allowed two runs on four hits and three walks while striking out five. The only major blemish came in the form of a two-run home run allowed to Chris Taylor in the fourth inning. The five walks are somewhat alarming, but Sheffield carried a 50th percentile walk rate of 8.6 percent in 2020, so the lack of control Monday may be the natural result of working on locating secondary pitches. Sheffield figures to be a streaming candidate for fantasy managers to start the 2021 season.--Doug Goldring

The Seattle Mariners designated left-hander Justus Sheffield for assignment on Thursday to make room on the 40-man roster for infielder Tommy La Stella, who was signed to a one-year deal Thursday. Sheffield has pitched in five major-league seasons (four with Seattle) and has gone 12-12 with a 5.47 ERA (4.77 FIP), 1.63 WHIP and 18.2 percent strikeout rate in 186 innings covering 48 appearances (33 starts). Last year in Seattle he had a 3.86 ERA (4.83 FIP), 1.29 WHIP, six walks and seven strikeouts in just 11 2/3 innings over six outings (one start). If Sheffield isn't claimed off waivers or traded to another team, he could return to the organization as both starting and relief depth.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBaller

Seattle Mariners pitcher Justus Sheffield has been optioned to Triple-A Tacoma on Sunday. They need to shorten their roster, so it seems that Sheffield is the odd man out. He was excellent out of the bullpen for the Mariners. He threw 4 2/3 scoreless innings during his time at the big leagues this season. Although, the Mariners are likely sending him to the minors, so he can stretch out as a starting pitcher. Fantasy managers shouldn't expect Sheffield to remain in the minors for too long.--Andy Webb - RotoBaller
