Adalberto Mondesi Swipes First Base Of Spring On Friday
4 years agoKansas City Royals shortstop Adalberto Mondesi stole a base and scored a run in Friday's tie with the Angels. Mondesi laid down a sacrifice bunt, reached on a scoring error, then promptly stole second base for his first swiped bag of the spring. The 25-year-old has six hits and five runs scored in nine Cactus League games. Mondesi ranked in the 98th percentile in sprint speed last year and has stolen 67 bases over his last 161 games, having been caught stealing just 15 times. His plate discipline is admittedly poor, but his dip in batting average didn't jive with his .350 BABIP- and can perhaps be explained by a 6.7 percent decline in his line drive rate. Mondesi's stolen base prowess is a huge advantage in roto formats- and he might not be as poor in the batting average and home run categories as expected.
