John Means Named Opening Day Starter Against Red Sox
4 years agoBaltimore Orioles starting pitcher John Means was named the team's Opening Day starter on Friday. Means would have made his first career Opening Day start last season, but arm fatigue derailed the Orioles' plans and cost the left-hander some time. The 27-year-old pitched to a 4.53 ERA in 43 2/3 innings last year, though he finished the year strong with a 1.52 ERA and 30 strikeouts to just 3 walks in his final four starts of the shortened season. Means made big strides in his fastball spin rate, 88th percentile in 2020, and break on his offspeed pitches, as he increased the horizontal movement on his curveball, slider, and changeup. Means is a good late-round option with strikeout upside at his 221 ADP.
