RotoBaller PGA: One And Done Staff Picks - Arnold Palmer Invitational

The PGA RotoBaller staff digs into their One and Done selections for the Arnold Palmer Invitational. Here are some under-the-radar plays and picks for this week's event.

One And Done Staff Picks Overview

Here at RotoBaller, we are always searching for ways to give our readers the best fantasy sports content possible. With that goal in mind, we are very proud to announce the weekly PGA “One and Done” column will be back for a third season.

In this feature, our golf staff of Joe Nicely, Spencer Aguiar, Andrew Putters and Josh Bennett will provide their weekly golf picks every Wednesday. The purpose of this article is to present you with alternative options to consider and hopefully make your selection a much easier process weekly. With that plan in mind, let's get started!

For an in-depth breakdown of the top DraftKings and FanDuel plays, check out Joe Nicely's weekly Horse For The Course that highlights the best fits for the week's course. And you can also find out who the smart money is on by checking out Spencer Aguiar's PGA DFS: Vegas Report every week. Be sure to also read all of our other top-notch weekly PGA DFS and betting articles to help you win big!

One and Done Selections - Arnold Palmer Invitational

Joe Nicely - Matthew Fitzpatrick

Alternate - Tyrrell Hatton

After a decent top-10 from Patrick Reed last week, I head into the Arnold Palmer Invitational still in search of my first win of the year. There are lots of ways to go at Bay Hill if chasing win equity...Rory McIlroy, Bryson DeChambeau, and Tyrrell Hatton have all excelled on this golf course in the past and are proven winners.

However, I’m gonna make what might be an outside-of-the-box selection this week and pick a player that is yet to win on the PGA Tour, Matthew Fitzpatrick. Still just 26-years-old, the Englishman isn’t usually mentioned as one of the exciting “young guns” on the PGA Tour, but Fitzpatrick already has six (!) European Tour wins under his belt and is just searching for a breakthrough win on U.S. soil. This week’s API presents a tremendous opportunity for that win in America, as Fitz has played extremely well in previous visits to Bay Hill and comes in off two strong performances at Genesis and WGC-Workday.

Yes, this feels risky, as I realize I’m leaving so much firepower in the holster this week, but over the years I’ve learned that you sometimes have to zig when everyone else zags in order to gain ground in OAD contests

Spencer Aguiar - Rory McIlroy

Alternate - Tyrrell Hatton

I am under the assumption that the PGA Tour is just churning out young talent. Collin Morikawa, Viktor Hovland, Sungjae Im, Joaquin Niemann...the list goes on and on when it comes to the brigade of young players that can compete at the highest level. I originally stated during the WGC that I was going to rein in the high-end onslaught after firing, unsuccessfully, might I add, on Bryson DeChambeau and Jon Rahm in back-to-back weeks, but the endless pit of players will have me shooting all my bullets until the holster is empty.

For the sake of this competition, I am assuming we aren't playing until the Tour Championship, which takes one of the massive events off the table that I would be considering McIlroy for moving forward. I might have a little regret that I won't have the Irishman in my back pocket during the PGA Championship at Kiawah Island, but that is an issue I am willing to figure out as the event draws closer.

The 31-year-old has produced 10 finishes inside the top-21 over his last 11 tournaments, and I believe it speaks to the expectation level around his game that a sixth-place at the WGC  has been considered a disappointment by the industry. I can't quite pinpoint what is going wrong on Sunday that is preventing him from having a chance to enter the winner's circle again, but there is going to be a week where the eighth-ranked player in the world puts all the pieces together. Will that happen here? I am not sure. But McIlroy does have a victory and three other top-six results at this venue over the last four years for a reason.

Yearly Earnings - $3,122,988

Yearly Cuts Made - 7/8

Josh Bennett - Jason Day

Alternate - Justin Rose

Some would say this is an uphill climb for me and a good approach to claw back into it would be with a safe play that’s more than likely to bring in a large cash day. So, of course, I’ll follow the “do-the-opposite” approach and play back-to-back withdraw-er of this very event, Jason Day! He’s coming in with some decent form, and before his WD’s in this event in the past, he’s had some pretty stellar finishes here. This isn’t a birdie fest, it’s not a bomb and gouge, it’s also not a fairway finder’s contest. This event plays right into what Jason does well, which is why he usually plays well here. They can lay up off many of the tees here and a lot of approaches come from long distances anyway, so tons of greens are missed and the short-game specialists should succeed. Short game, scrambling, and putting is what Jason has always been good at and continues to be good at. He likely won’t light the tournament on fire with a 62, but he should keep a steady roll of a few shots under par and find himself near the top of the leaderboard on Sunday (assuming he plays past the first hole on Thursday).

Yearly Earnings - $176,886

Yearly Cuts Made - 5/8

Andrew Putters - Rory McIlroy

Alternate - Viktor Hovland

We all know about the talent level of Rory and the amount of back door top 10s are equal to none. But this course, in particular, is a great fit for him. Iron play over 200 yards is going to be important, along with par-five scoring. I don’t think there is a par-five on tour that Rory can not reach in two. All we need is for Rory to get a little hot with the putter, and he should come out on top.

Yearly Earnings - $744,840

Yearly Cuts Made - 5/8
