Dellin Betances Feels Much Better This Spring
4 years agoNew York Mets right-handed reliever Dellin Betances said on Wednesday that he feels significantly better than he did last spring. Betances indicated that he was able to have a regular off-season which allowed him to work on his pitching and health. Betances is coming off a forgettable 2020 campaign that saw significant declines in his pitch velocity and walk rate. Due to a late-season lat injury, he was limited to just 11 2/3 innings pitched in 2020 in which he posted a 7.71 ERA, a 2.06 WHIP, and a brutal 11:12 K:BB. Additionally, in 2019, he missed virtually the entire season due to a shoulder and an Achilles injury. As was the case heading into 2020, Betances' effectiveness and fantasy value for 2021 will hinge on whether he is fully healthy and can reproduce velocities exhibited when he was a Yankee in 2018. If he can replicate that success, he should be valuable in leagues that rewards holds. Of course, this is a big "if" considering he hasn't pitched a full season in over two years. For now, Betances should be left on fantasy waiver wires until he proves to be an effective component of the Mets' revamped 2021 bullpen.
