Pelicans guard/forward Nickeil Alexander-Walker is a worthy consideration as a fantasy basketball waiver wire pickup heading into Week 7 of the NBA season.
BALLER MOVE: Add in 14-Team Leagues
ROSTERED IN: 12% of leagues
ANALYSIS: This is more of a mid/long-term play rather than a present-day one. The rumors are growing louder when it comes to New Orleans looking for trade partners in an eventual transaction sending Lonzo Ball and/or JJ Redick away from Mardi Town. The Pelicans are determined to move on from the expiring/veteran and stay rebuilding around the Zion+Ingram pair and a bunch of younger pieces. Enter main beneficiary, Nickeil Alexander-Walker.
NAW hasn't been anything otherworldly this season, don't get this wrong. Alexander-Walker is playing mostly as part of the second unit, and logging around 24 MPG these days. In those ticks, NAW is putting up 8.8 PPG, 3.6 RPG, and 2.2 APG looking back at his last five games played. The shooting is a little bit down at just 36 percent from the floor on 9.4 FGA per game, though it's not that the context is helping NAW a lot as he's part of a bench mob not quite great.
If any of Zo/JJ gets traded, it all points to NAW taking on the starting role along with Bledsoe (assuming he stays in NOLA...). That would mean much better opportunities and high-value touches/shots for NAW going forward. Don't add NAW to your squad if you don't have enough room and can afford to wait, though.
